Tippin was born in 1958 in Pensacola, Florida and was brought up on a family farm near Greer, SC. He got interested in music while he was growing up as he used to sing while doing the day to day work. He started playing the guitar at the tender age of ten but also developed a passion for flying air crafts. By the time he was 15 years old he got his pilots license but he went back to his musical career once there was a downfall in the industry. He played the regional honky tonk circuit and in the mean time he polished his songwriting skills. He migrated in 1986 to Nashville. In Nashville he got the job of a songwriter at the famous Acuff-Rose firm. Here he composed songs and they were recorded by famous producers like Charley Pride, Mark Collie, and David Ball. He signed a recording deal with the RAC Records in 190 when they heard one o his demo tapes.
In 1991 he released his debut album, which was titled, You've Got to Stand for Something. It was a big hit specially its title song which was a smash hit in the wake of the Persian Gulf War.
After the release of this album he was invited on Bob Hope's USO tour. In 1992 he released his second album titled Read Between the Lines, which was a major hit and sold more than a million copies. The following year's Lookin' Back at Myself was less successful, but 1995's Tool Box returned him to the top of the singles charts with "That's as Close as I'll Get to Loving You."
In 1998 Tippin switched his recording label from RCA to Lyric Street Records. He released his first album for this label which was titled, What This Country Needs, which was a major hit. The follow-up album titled People Like Us was released in 2000 and was the first of his albums to make the country Top Five. The Christmas album A December to Remember was released in 2001, followed by Stars & Stripes, in 2002.
