Born in Korea, the twin sisters Maria and Lucia Ahn, along with their sister Angella formed the band Ahn Trio. All three of them would play the piano initially but when Lucy took a serious liking towards the Piano, Angella moved to the violin and Maria to the cello.
In the year 1979, they had their first brush with media and featured in Korean television.
In 1981, they came to U.S and enrolled in The Juilliard School. The were noted by the Americans when in 1987, Time magazine had an article on them and referred them as "Asian American Whiz Kid". They further got recognition through the NBC coverage of the Seoul Olympics.
They won the 1992 Alliance Northeast Competition and the Coleman Chamber Competition. They soon featured in eatured in Vogue, GQ, Town and Country, The New York Times.
Right from their first recording, they had been creating waves. With their EMI recording of trios by Suk, Dvorak and Shostakovich - they were the much deserving recipient of Germany's presitigious ECHO Award. With their 1997 MTV appearance on Bryan Adams' Unplugged program, Ahn-Plugged soon developed. Their vitality and craftsmanship continues to draw new audience to classical music. With Ahn unplugged they attempted to present classical music in its alternative form.
"Our main goal is to add people to our audiences, people who normally would not go to classical concerts," said Angella Ahn to Artvoice magazine.
"It's interesting for us to do the 'Ahn-Plugged' with the Tchaikovsky, because the Tchaikovsky is probably standard as music can get. And then 'Ahn-Plugged' is absolutely let-go-of-everything and just listen to the music. We don't even have the specific pieces programmed; we will be announcing them as we go along."
