Background:
She was born on 23rd September, 1970. This talented woman is a songwriter, guitarist and progressive singer. When she was nine years old, she started playing at local bars with her guitar singer and from there she built on her musical career. At the age of fifteen she moved out of the family and lived on own. She supported herself mainly by her vocal performances and graduated from The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts school.
When she was eighteen, in 1989, she opened her own record company. It was just a fifty dollars record company called Righteous Babe Records. And in the winter of 1990, came out Ani DiFranco. She therein went to New York City and toured heavily.

She is a declared bisexual and in the year 1998 married Andrew Gilchrist. He is a sound engineer. But five years later she parted ways with him, though they still remain friend.

Some of her song echo the choice that has to be made between one life and the another. Generally the words of her songs are autobiographical. But her words also echo political as well as social issues like: racism, war, poverty, sexual abuse, womans right and so on. This surely won her many fans among the college students during the 1994.
she rose to success in the 90's , more with the word of mouth and personal contact than any word of mouth. Thus the fans often shared a feeling of brotherhood among themselves.

She also voiced her political opinion outside the musical arena. In the presidential election during 2000, she encouraged voting for Ralph Nader and in 2004 supported Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich.

Her high acoustic guitar had left a deep impact on the audience. "Out of Range", was notable. Her lyrics are sophisticated; word play, touch of irony and alliteration are important components. Descriptive use of metaphors and rhythmic variation makes her music unforgettable. Talkin' Ani DiFranco's Mom Blues," is one such example from her early career.

Her music is folk rock and alternative rock. In her road to success, she has been associated with names like; Prince, rapper Corey Parker and the folk musician Utah Phillips.

She marks, "Folk music is not an acoustic guitar--that's not where the heart of it is. I use the word 'folk' in reference to punk music and rap music. It's an attitude, it's an awareness of one's heritage, and it's a community. It's subcorporate music that gives voice to different communities and their struggle against authority."

Her new album Knuckle Down, came out in 2005. She had been touring continuously for 15 years making every tour of hers a memorable event in itself. Her tour in 2005, finished with her featuring in FloydFest World Music and genre crossover festival in Floyd, Virginia.
