When Zack de la Rocha departed from Rage Against the Machine in October 2000, the band's future had almost come to an end. And further more, a rumor was spread that ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell would be replacing de la Rocha. But, the rumor proved to be true when de la Rocha joined the group in 2001. The group members which included Cornell, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, and Tom Morello who spent the consecutive year writing and recording. It showed that the band was now coming back to their usual form.
In the spring 2002, the quartet were no longer associated with the Rage Against the Machine and signed another record label titled Ozzfest. But, Cornell left the project in the beginning of the year, when the group had undergone a summer tour.
The band reunited when Cornell joined the rest of the band by early fall. Initially, the band decided on the name "Civilian" but later on came up with "Audioslave." The band came up with their first single "Cochise," which is a name given to the famous American Indian chief who died free and unconquered. This was debuted in September 2002 and did a considerable business among radio, followed by their epic debut that was released in November.
