Who doesn't love a parade, especially one that at one time culminated in an actual battle of flowers? It's time to get tickets to witness one of the best parades in the country, the Battle of Flowers Parade! This is one parade that is steeped deep in tradition and has a rich history dating back to the eighteen hundreds. Today the parade forms an integral part of the culture of San Antonio and has proven to be a huge tourist draw for the state of Texas.

The idea for the parade came in 1891 when the wife of a congressman suggested it after seeing the same thing happen in Spain. In this case, the parade would be held to commemorate the fallen heroes at the Alamo and to celebrate the victory of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. With these noble aims in mind, the congressman's wife and a few friends formed the Battle of Flowers Parade committee which set about putting this plan into action.

With the help of a number of leaders in the community, the parade became a reality, the novelty being that one half of the carriages, covered with flowers, would head in one direction and the other half of the carriages would head in the other. While the two contingents passed each other they would toss flowers at each other and at the spectators.

The success of this parade soon grew by leaps and bounds and by 1895, it had grown into a full-fledged week long celebration. At one point a family of parade royalty consisting of a king, queen, princess and courtiers was also added but later abandoned. By the start of the 1900s, carriages were being replaced by horseless vehicles and the sheer size and amount of floats caused the idea of using fresh flowers to be abandoned for the more practical artificial ones.

As the parade grew in popularity year after year, a number of traditions began to form and stick. In 1973 the practice of wearing yellow hats began and by '76, this had extended to all association members wearing yellow dresses. Though the practice of tossing flowers had long ago been abandoned, it was revived for the year of the parade's centennial anniversary in 1991.

Today the Battle of Flowers Parade consists of a number of floats that range from military floats, antique cars, majorettes, high school marching bands and lots of helium balloons. It's the perfect way to spend a day with the family so don't miss it! Contact your online ticket vendor today to get your tickets to see the Battle of Flowers Parade.
