It's time to get your tickets to pay homage to the original gods of gothic rock- it's time to get your tickets to see Bauhaus live in concert. These dark lads have made a permanent mark on the music industry, reviving the collapse of punk and infusing a heady, dark and addictive new strain of music into the world that has created a whole new culture in the gothic scene.
Bauhaus was formed in 1978, taking their name from the German Bauhaus movement in art. They were originally known as Bauhaus 1919 but dropped the number within a year of getting together. The line up was and continues to be Peter Murphy on vocals, David J on bass, Kevin Haskins on drums and Daniel Ash on guitar and sax. By the time these boys hit the music scene, it was the eighties and punk had already collapsed into itself. Bauhaus were the first band to ever combine the elements of glam rock, punk and funk into an atmosphere that was intensely melancholy. Thus was born the definitive gothic rock.
The band started spreading its music by releasing singles- their first was 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' which is a whopping nine minutes long and was recorded in one take. Though it did not hit the charts, the single remained stocked in music stores for a number of years, bearing testament to the popularity of the song and the band. After three more singles, the band finally released their debut album In the Flat Field in 1980.
The band continued to churn out albums and garner a host of fans until their fourth album, during which Murphy contracted pneumonia. Despite the other band members pulling together to help get the album finished, creative tensions within the band and the increasing uneasiness with the label Gothic Rock caused the band to part ways in 1983.
It wasn't until 1998 that Bauhaus reunited and began touring. During the gap all four musicians had pursued successful solo careers with a number of solo albums. As Bauhaus, the band proved that they were now bigger and badder than ever. Following a reunion gig in 2005, Bauhaus went on a tour that covered Europe, North America and Mexico with a promise to fans that plans were in the making to record an album once the tour was finished. In 2006 the band announced that it would be touring with Nine Inch Nails.
