The Beach Boys were Fformed in Hawthorne, California in 196. The group included brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Mike sang most of the leads while Brian led on some of the vocals. The early inspirations of the group were the Wilsons' musician father, Murry, and the close vocal harmonies of groups such as The Four Freshmen. The group performed initially as The Pendletones, after the Pendleton wool shirts popular then. The Beach Boys' early material focused on the California youth lifestyle, cars and of course surfing.
With their parents help the Wilson brothers rented instruments and studio time to record "Surfin'," a novelty number written by Brian and Mike. The single, initially released in 1961 on Candix. This prompted a little national chart action and gained the renamed Beach Boys a contract with Capitol.
Before the release of any material for Capitol, however, Jardine left the band to attend college in the Midwest. A friend of the Wilsons, David Marks, replaced him.

In mid-1962 the Beach Boys released their major-label debut, "Surfin' Safari." The title track, a more accomplished novelty single than its predecessor, hit the Top 20 and helped launch the surf rock craze just beginning to blossom around Southern California. A similarly themed follow-up, "Surfin U.S.A.," hit the Top Ten in early 1963 before Jardine returned from school and resumed his place in the group. By that time, the Beach Boys had recorded their first two albums.
By the end of 1963, the Beach Boys had recorded three full LPs, hit the Top Ten as many times, and toured incessantly. Also, Brian began to grow as a producer, best documented on the third Beach Boys LP, "Surfer Girl." Although surf songs still dominated the album, "Catch a Wave," the title track, and especially "In My Room" presented a giant leap in songwriting, production, and group harmony

The following year, "I Get Around" became the first number one hit for the Beach Boys. Riding a crest of popularity, the late 1964 LP Beach Boys Concert spent four weeks at the top of the album charts, just one of five Beach Boys LPs simultaneously on the charts. Conducting their first major U.S. tour in September, 1964, The Beach Boys Concert album, recorded in Sacramento, California , became the first live album to top the charts. On the same tour, while on a plane trip from Houston to Los Angeles, Brian had a nervous breakdown brought on by an overwhelming schedule of writing, producing, recording, and touring. Brian stopped touring with the band and guitarist/singer Glenn Campbell was brought in to perform for him on the road, who was replaced by Bruce Johnston in April, 1965.

No longer touring, Brian Wilson began working on the Pet Sounds album, employing scores of studio musicians and utilizing advanced studio techniques. However, despite lush orchestral sound and songs such as "God Only Knows," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B," Pet Sounds sold poorly compared to other releases.

On December 10. 1966 it reached number one. Meanwhile, Brian began behaving erratically as rumors of heavy drug use circulated. For whatever reason Smile was not released. Smiley Smile was released on the group's recently formed label, Brother Records, distributed by Capitol.

In the summer the Beach Boys recorded their last record for Capitol, "Break Away." They then signed with Warner Brother's Reprise label and charted May 7, 1970 with "Add Some Music to Your Day."

In 1977, the Beach Boys signed with Caribou records and by 1979 charted with a disco flavored remake of "Here Comes the Night" (#44) originally on their Wild Honey album.

In 1985 the Beach Boys recorded their best original record since the early days. With Mike Love on lead and Brian's strong falsetto "Getcha Back" and its harmony right out of the Mystics "Hushabye," reached number twenty-six.. Next came "Rock and Roll to the Rescue (#68 1986) and a remake of the Mama and Papa's "California Dreamin'" (#57 1986).

An amazing barometer of their appeal is that between 1961 and 1981 they were only off the charts two years, 1972 and 1979. The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
