The band Belle and Sebastian takes its name from a French children's television series in which a boy and his dog was almost have to be precious. But, the artists possessed positive qualities which also reflected in their magnificent, delicate melodies sound full-bodied. With one of the prestigious artist in the group guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch, it showcases all the elements of folk-rock and 60's pop. The songs are real with a unsetting lyrical detail.

Belle and Sebastian originally are based in Glasgow, Scotland. The group released their first two albums in the year 1996 during the chamber pop movement. Initially, though the band had to face with certain critics in Britain's music weeklies and labeled the band into the subgenre, it was still too pretty, and soft to have that label. The initial two years of the band's musical career included photo shoots and publicity campaigns which was done just after the release of their albums during that period. Their performances included odd places such as coffeehouses and cafes, homes, church halls, and libraries.

The band's typical unusual approach in establishing their career isn't very astonishing as compared to the Murdoch's approach towards the formation of a band. The artist moved to London in the beginning of 90's when finally he succeeded in finding the group's leader Lawrence Hayward. Other group members include Sarah Martin (violin), Stevie Jackson on guitar, Chris Geddes on keyboards, bassist Stuart David, drummer Richard Colburn, and Isobel Campbell on cello.

The seven members of the band were college students and so they decided to keep their band grow on a small scale. In May 1996, the group came up with their debut album "Tigermilk" under the label Electric Honey Records. Though only small number of the album's copies were released, it became a sensational hit amongst the crowd throughout england. With a hit debut album under their belt, the band now entered the mainstream music industry. They released their second album under their independent record label in 1996. with this release the band got several harsh critics from the media world from all over England.

Belle and Sebastian after returning from a long worldwide tour, climbed new stages of stardom and eventually released their fifth album "The Life Pursuit" in the year 1996. This album was recorded in their hometown Scotland.
