"Better Than Ezra" are known for their scintillating music. Their music is a blend of rock with melody which is a digestible form of alternative music for the music lovers. With their matching styled outfits as the Goo Goo Dolls, the band helped to make a ground which helped to nurture many acts of the late '90s including Semisonic, Sugar Ray, Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty and many more. Their music stands somewhere, between country and punk. Originally, the band was formed in 1998. The original line up of the band comprised of Kevin Griffin (vocals, guitar), Joel Rundell (guitar), Tom Drummond (bass), and Cary Bonnecaze (drums).
It's all started when all of them were studying in the Louisiana State University. They began their music journey by some gigs around college bars and fraternity houses. In 1990, the band issued their debut cassette, "Surprise." This release earned some positive reviews from press and they were compared to some alt-punk stalwarts such as Dinosaur Jr. and Replacements. Suddenly, band's future came under scrutiny as Rundell one of the band members committed suicide in 1990.
This was a huge shock for the band members and all of them opted to go in separated directions.Fortunately, they reunited by the end of the year as a trio. With fresh enthusiasm and conviction they restarted their musical journey and relocated to Los Angeles. With their diligent efforts band members successfully issued their independent release "Deluxe" in 1993. This release helped to raise their profile. Soon the offers came pouring in. Finally they signed up with Elektra which reissued Deluxe two years later in 1995.
With this release the band earned a reasonable radio hit with super hit number "Good." In early 1996, Bonnecaze opted to leave the band and he was replaced by a fellow New Orleans native, Travis McNabb. With their new line up, "Better Than Ezra" hit the recording studio and went on to issue their 2nd major-label album, "Friction, Baby" in 1996.
Although, it couldn't do well like its predecessor. Now, the band moved on to create their own recording studio in New Orleans and named it Fudge Studios. In 1998, the band recorded their fourth album, "How Does Your Garden Grow?" This album could not do well. Undeterred by such developments the band signed on with the Beyond music label. In 2001, the band issued their next release, "Closer." Catch them performing live, just grab your tickets from an on-line ticket vendor to avoid the rush for tickets.
