Black Eyed Peas is a Hip Hop Band that does not incorporate the gangster style image that is prevalent in this genre. The group have been together since high school. Will. I. Am and Apl de Ap were part of the break dancing group known as Tribal Nation. The two however wanted to concentrate on their music more than their dance and broke off. The formed their own band called, Atban Klann. The name was an acronym for A Tribe Beyond A Nation.

The group signed up with Eazy E's label, "Ruthless Records" in 1992. Their were questions raised about the decision taken by Eazy and Atban to revert from the gangster style image. An album was recorded, but it was not released by Ruthless. With the death of Eazy in 1995, the group were dropped by the label. The band were not discouraged, they hired another MC/dancer, Taboo to their lineup and re-packaged themselves as the Black Eyed Peas. The group began performing around the LA area.
