Carlos Vives was born in Santa Marta in 1961. It was here that he spent his initial 12 years of life. After this his family migrated to Bogotá in search of a better financial opportunities. After moving to Bogotá he developed a taste for rock music. This led him to play at local bars and cafés. He was also very interested in acting so at the same time, he pursued an acting career along side his musical career. He acted in Colombia for the soap opera Gallito Ramírez. The soap was about a Colombian Caribbean coast boxer who falls in love with an uptight girl which was beautifully portrayed by his first wife, Margarita Rosa de Francisco.

He was offered an acting job in Puerto Rico in 1989 and so he moved to Puerto Rico which led to a break in his music career. He did the leading role in the famous soaps La Otra and Aventurera. Here he met, fell in love and got married for the second time to a lady called Hermelinda Gomez.

In 1991 when he came back to Colombia he was offered a TV role that altered his life drastically. He backed the leading role of a fantasy series which was based on the life of Vallenato composer Rafael Escalona and was aptly titled Escalona. He sang the composer's songs in the series, and it was during this time that he steered his career towards Vallenato and its fusion with rock, pop and other Caribbean Colombian ethnic rhythms. He released his "Clásicos de la Provincia" which was a Colombian classic and had the aura of Latin music as well in 1993.

He released in 1995 "La Tierra del Olvido", in 1997 "Tengo Fe", in 1999 "El Amor de mi Tierra", in 2001 "Déjame Entrar" and in 2004 "El Rock de mi Pueblo" which were of very high quality but were not very famous. Presently he is in a relationship with former beauty queen Claudia Elena Vásquez.
