Carolyn Dawn Johnson was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, in 1971. Her tryst with piano began at the tender age of 5, and this was also the time when she began strumming her first guitar. She was so fascinated by musical instruments that she also learnt the clarinet, saxophone, flute, and the mandolin while in high school. She worked on her singing while doing hymns with her family at the neighborhood church. She began penning her songs and thought about a career as professional musician while she was a teenager.

In pursuance of this dream she shifted to Nashville, TN in a bid to realize her musical ambitions. Her first job was that of bartender but alongside it , she started performing wherever she could. Though her initial journey was nothing to write home about, she kept up her hopes and continued writing those little country songs, which would later become her trademark. Her performances slowly earned her a fair degree of local popularity and within a year Patrick Joseph Music had signed her on for a publishing contract. In 1999, she joined Martin McBride's band and began touring with the group, winning kudos for her songwriting ability in Nashville. Though she spent an enjoyable time traveling with McBride, her singing ambitions saw her constantly trying to bag a record deal. Her hard work and her talent bore fruit and she signed on with Arista Records which released her first solo recording "Georgia". The single was an instant success and saw itself landing of the Billboards and R&R charts.

Her career path has seen Johnson write and co-write tunes for some of the more famous name in Country music, including Linda Davis, Kathy Mattea, Suzy bogus, and Pam Tillis. Her single "Single White Female" alongwith Chely Wright was one of the biggest country successes of 1999. This song earned Johnson an award for 'Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year' from Music Row Awards in the year 2000. In 2001 she came out with Room With a View and her latest album is called Dress Rehearsal. As a singer she is know for her electrifying energy and an inherent restlessness.
