Raymond Ayala nicknamed as Daddy Yankee and often called El Cangri ('The Boss') is a reggaeton singer who was born on February 3, 1976 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico.
Ayala is presently famous because of his song "Gasolina", which was published in his album, titled "Barrio Fino" which was released in 2004.
The album was a major hit and has sold over 1,000,000 copies in Puerto Rico and large number of copies in the United States. Ayala has appeared in more than 50 albums apart from his personal albums. They include "Mas Flow" and "Blin Blin Vol. 1". Raymond Ayala is popular for his English and Spanish recordings though presently Ayala is focusing more on Spanish music.
Raymond Ayala primarily was involved in local music scene in the early 1990s along with Playero DJ, who himself was a pioneer of reggaeton music. Ayala has also worked with Nicky Jam and more recently Luny Tunes, DJ Blass, DJ Eric, Eliel, Nas at Madison Square Garden, recorded with DJ Tony Touch and many others.
Raymond Ayala first reggaeton music tour to American and Latin America commenced on August 27th 2005.Initially there was a strong influence of salsa and hip-hop in his music but recently he has been working his way to the top of the reggaeton scene and has won accolades along the way. He is also known as the King of Improvisation and has made his way into the Latin music arena as he knows Playero who was a very famous DJ/producer in the late '90s and early 2000s. Finally he recorded his debut album on the One Tough Cop soundtrack in 1998. Yankee's album debut came in 2000 with El Cartel de Yankee, followed by a second volume a year later, which in turn led to El Changri.com (2002) and Los Homerun-es (2003). The two latter albums were released by him on his own VI Music label. Los Homerun-es was the biggest-selling album in Puerto Rico, preparing for the release of crossover success of Barrio Fino (2004).
Barrio Fino was the first reggaeton album to debut at number one on the Billboard chart and it was backed with the major-label of Universal. The omnipresence of "Gasolina" helped increase the sales of Barrio Fino, as the song crossed over into numerous markets. Yankee is continuously producing a steady stream of albums with the live album Ahora Le Toca al Cangri and many more are on their way to release.
