Dana International is the stage name of Sharon Cohen and is an Israeli transsexual pop singer. She was born as Yaron Cohen in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel on 2nd February 1972. Dana was the youngest among the three children. The others included an older sister named Limor and another older brother named Nimrod. She is basically of Yemenite origin and came into limelight when she won the reputed Eurovision Song Contest in the year 1998 for her popular song "Diva".
This song was instrumental in propelling her into the big league. Dana realized quite early that her belonged performing on stage. She enjoyed her participation in the Eurovision Contest and quickly followed it closely with other successful numbers. She incidentally was the very first Israeli artist to be ever interviewed on MTV channel. Apart from original songs, Dana is also known for her elaborate cover versions of classic old hits. Till date she has successfully released eight complete albums, apart from another three compilation albums. She also has worked quite well with other major Israeli artists, including the remarkable DJ Ofer Nissim. International's first hit number was the delightful song "My Name Is Not Sa'ida" which incidentally was a lampooning and hilarious cover version of Whitney Houston's famous song titled "My Name Is Not Susan" It was greatly liked and it received a great deal of radio airplay. In 1993, International had a sex reassignment surgery, and returned as Sharon Cohen. That very year she successfully released her first album titled Dana International. She soon successfully went gold in Israel.
She evidently was also very popular in many other countries. Her new album is to be released this year. She made an prominent appearance as a guest presenter and also as a performer at the widely telecasted 50th anniversary Eurovision concert held in the city of Copenhagen in Denmark. This event took place in October 2005, where her famous number 1998 winner "Diva" was also nominated in the category as one of the 14 main finalists in the long drawn search for the best Eurovision song.
Dana has a tremendous presence on stage and brings with her raw energy along with a melodic voice. Her countless fans are known to travel long distances in order to hear her sing. So if you desire to listen to her mesmerizing voice; do remember to get your tickets early.
