In the year 1968, his father died due to a heart attack at only forty-nine. His death had a deep effect on young Daniel's formative years. Daniel evidently spent his summers with his loving grandmother on the beautiful island of Owey. His strong interest in music surfaced as a teenager, when he happened to enjoy the traditional Irish dancing forms at the local village community hall.
He then disclosed his desire to become a singer to his sister Margo who was already quite an established singer of repute and a prominent household name in those times in Ireland. In early 1980, Daniel left his college before graduating to pursue his dreams and went on to join her band. His career soon took off after he went on to record and successfully release Johnny McCauley's compilation titled My Donegal Shore in the year 1983, with a mere £1,200 of his own hard earned money, and it necessitated him selling most copies by himself. In the later half of that year, he went on to form his own highly successful musical group titled Country Fever. After some period when the group disbanded, he went on to form The Grassroots. Thereafter he has never looked back and has received wide success and huge adulation from his fans. In the year 2002, he received an honorary MBE for his great services and contribution to the music industry. He has been a chart topper through his illustrious career and has as many as fifteen Top 40 singles. This apart he has sold 10 million compilations worldwide. His music has been an inspiration t many aspiring country Irish singers.
