Finland, Norway and Sweden along with Germany have long-since established themselves as having a very strong and very unique brand of heavy metal churning and bubbling in their depths. Unlike a lot of the American brands of heavy metal that often tend to stray into the mainstream and get watered down as a result, European heavy metal maintains a very serious edge, which is why genres like brutal death metal, black metal, horror metal and technical metal find a quick home here.

It is in these circumstances that Dark Tranquility came to light. During the late nineties, one particular branch of death metal in Scandinavia began to morph- the genre became slightly more accessible (but not very) as a number of types of fusion began to take place. Firstly, experimentation with progressive metal elements began to take place, along with the fusion of some elements of British heavy metal, which included twin-guitar leads and much catchier riffs. The leading exponents of this new wave of metal were Dark Tranquility and the place where much of it was done was in Gothenburg, thus giving rise to the term Gothenburg metal.

Dark Tranquility was formed in 1989 and after a few years of touring and gigging, the band released their debut album Skydancer. Unlike most heavy metal bands of that time, Dark Tranquility maintained their initial line-up for a while, undergoing a shuffling only much later in their career. Their releases continued to do extremely well on the death metal scenes and with the release of their album The Gallery, Dark Tranquility were able to gain an international fan following. After recently switching to a new record label, the band's sound has morphed into a more gothic sound, with less traditional sounds and styles entering their songs. The band has cited Judas Priest, At the Gates and Iron Maiden among their influences. Other bands like In Flames, Amon Amarth, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy and Hypocrisy are some bands that share in the Dark Tranquility brand of metal.
