He's tickled your funny bone with his column and books- now it's your chance to get tickets to see funny-man Dave Barry live! Barry is not just your average comic writer- he has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work and spent a number of years writing an extremely popular column for the Miami Herald. With tickets to see him live, you have tickets to see an award-winning humorist who can find humor in almost anything.
Barry was born in 1947 in New York, the son of a Presbyterian minister. Early on, Barry established himself as a wit and comedian by winning the title of class clown in high school. Barry's wit can be seen in the way he recalls his past- he remembers that he avoided the draft during the Vietnam War citing religious reasons although he maintains that he had been an atheist much early on. After playing in a rock band called Federal Duck and managing to get a Bachelors Degree in English, Barry went out to meet the world.
Barry admits that the glamorous world of journalism did not open up immediately for him. His first job was as a reporter with the Daily Local News in Pennsylvania, where he states that he covered a series of dull municipal meetings, some of which are still going on. He later joined Burger Associates, where he landed a job teaching effective writing skills to business people. Barry would spend eight years of his life trying to get people to stop writing things like `Enclosed please find the enclosed enclosures,'- after realizing that it was a futile affair, he left and joined as a humor columnist for the Miami Herald.
It is here that Barry did much of his best work and was able to gain entry into the television and movie world. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his Commentary in 1988 and from 1993 to 1997 a sitcom based on two of his books was broadcast on CBS. Another of Barry's books called Big Trouble was made into a major motion picture starring Tim Allen and Rene Russo. Another book called Complete Guide to Guys was also made into a movie.
Much of Barry's writing has been showcased in popular anthologies and magazines like Reader's Digest and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His writing is characterized by a number of features- he loves to talk about burning or exploding things, dogs of lower intelligence and strange government studies. He also loves to give long-winded abbreviations.
