Crosby's influence on modern day rock is often forgotten or overshadowed by the contributions of larger rock outfits like The Beatles or the Rolling Stones. The truth is that Crosby is one of the few individual artists whose influence can still be seen today and one can hear the distinct strains of Crosby's influence in the music of Crowded House, James Taylor, The Eagles, The Mamas and the Papas, The Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne and America.

Crosby was born in California and initially wanted to carve a niche for himself in the acting world but he would eventually drop out of drama school to pursue a career in music. He was a member of the Les Baxter Balladeers and cut his first solo session in 1963. The following year, Crosby got together with Roger McGuinn and a number of other musicians to form The Byrds, one of the most influential bands of our time. Crosby was responsible for the unusual phrasing in their music and also for their characteristic soulful and soaring harmonies. However by 1967 friction between the group members was at an all time high with Crosby especially angry with them for a number of reasons. He began to miss sessions on purpose and was fired from the group but by then, he had already met the members of what would be his next big project and another path-breaking band.

Crosby met a then unemployed Stills and started to jam with him- they were soon joined by Nash, who was originally with the Hollies. The group released an album that was an immediate hit and showcased some of Crosby's best songwriting skills, which were just beginning to blossom during his tenure with The Byrds. In 1969 the band was joined by Neil Young and began to really burn up the charts. However around the same time, Crosby lost his girlfriend in a car crash and began to abuse drugs heavily. The band eventually fell apart and subsequent efforts to reunite also failed.

Crosby released his solo album in 1971 which featured some great musicians like Joni Mitchell and Santana. Though initially panned by many critics, the album has gained much critical acclaim over the years and continues to be in print.
