Bellingham, WA, indie pop quartet Death Cab for Cutie started in 1997 as the solo work of singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard. He had originally recorded under the name All-Time Quarterback. You Can Play These Songs was a cassette which was hugely successful and was the inspiration that forced Gibbard to start a full-time band which included guitarist/organist Christopher Walla who had recorded the early DCFC sessions, bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Nathan Good. They synchronized their efforts and in the summer of 1998, Death Cab for Cutie released their debut LP which was titled Something About Airplanes. It received much appreciation from the indie circles. The drummer of the band Good left the band just before the band could complete the 2000 follow-up which was titled We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes.

He was immediately replaced by drummer Michael Schorr. The band released an EP titled the Forbidden Love in the fall of 2000. The band released another EP titled The Photo Album the next year which had a collection of all new songs. The band released hugely successful album titled Transatlanticism in 2003 when Eureka Farm's Jason McGerr joined the group. When the band was touring for the promotion of their fourth album they worked towards creating seven new songs. They compiled those songs into an EP and released The John Byrd E.P., which was named after the band's touring sound engineer John Byrd in March 2005. The group changed their recording label from Barsuk to Atlantic records and in August 2005 released their label's debut titled, Plans.
