It's time to get your tickets to see the woman who put the D in Diva, a woman who by many standards is probably one of the most successful entertainers of our time. It's time to get your tickets to see Diana Ross live in concert. Ross has had a tremendous impact on the entertainment industry as a whole and she continues to go strong even today.
Ross first hit the music scene as part of a group called the Primettes, which was later named The Supremes. Though initially the group had all the girls singing lead, the focus was soon placed on Ross alone as she was seen to be more if a draw for white audiences. The Supremes were a huge sensation but Motown records saw a future for Ross as a solo artist and in 1970, she bid farewell to the Supremes and focused on her solo career.
In what almost seemed like a dream run, Ross would not only notch up hit single after hit single, she would also successfully enter the acting field as well. Ross's debut album featured the song ' Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)' which would go on to be one of her signature tunes. In 1971, Ross was chosen to portray the talented and tortured Billie Holiday in the movie Lady Sings the Blues. Despite harsh criticism from all corners, Ross pursued the project with a vengeance and eventually garnered an Oscar nomination for her work in the film.
But Ross was just getting started. She began to work more on her pop image, working with Marvin Gaye for a duets album. She kept working at her acting, landing a role in the commercially successful Mahogany and in the Broadway hit The Wiz. Ross also began entering the disco phase with a number of dance hits. Her best work till date however appeared on the albums The Boss and diana which were released in 1979 and 1980. The latter album in particular featured the number 'I'm Coming Out', which went on to be a gay anthem and cemented Ross's future as a gay icon.
The eighties in general however were not so good for Ross. She switched over to RCA but was not happy there and so she returned to Motown records in 1989. However the old magic was distinctly missing and though Ross was an incredible concert draw, her albums were not as hot. Finally in 2002 she left Motown.
Ross has currently made a comeback of sorts with the release of some jazz numbers and her work with acts like Westlife and Rod Stewart. She has also got a brand new album all set for release which is eagerly awaited by her fans.
