The formation of the band is no less than a story. As high school friends guitarist Steve Morse and bassist Andy West used to play together. They frequently performed in Augusta, Georgia with a conventional rock band named Dixie Grit. At high school Morse used to sport long hair. For his hair he was criticized by the school authority. Eventually, Morse was expelled from school as he refused to cut his long hair. Interestingly that was the turning point in his lifelong musical journey. He got his admission at the University of Miami School of Music and came in touch with violinist Allen Sloan.
Allen was an accomplished violinist who possessed the experience of performing with the Miami Philharmonic as well as drummer Rod Morgenstein. The three decided to form a band, and Morse convinced Allen West to come to Miami and join. Thus the band the Dixie Dregs was born. Keyboardist Steve Davidowski later joined the band. In 1975, they recorded their first album "The Great Spectacular" as a class project. The trio began to perform live around the South. Then came the big break for the band. They got the chance to perform at the opening for Sea Level Festival in 1976. With their performance they impressed the representatives of the Capricorn Records who were present at the festival.
The Capricorn Records signed the band for a contract. The band also included Mark Parrish, former member of Dixie Grit to replace Davidowski. They made their official debut in1977 with "Free Fall". The album was a smash hit and the artists got much accolades for their tremendous work. The band then replaced Parrish with T. Lavitz and performed at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival. The group shortened their name and made it the Dregs. With that name they performed for 1981's Unsung Heroes.
The band was then splinted and Steve Morse formed his own band. He recorded several albums before joining Kansas from 1986 to 1988. However, the Dregs reunited for some series of live dates during 1988. In the meantime they released "Divided We Stand" which also made good collection. Now, most of the band members are concentrating more on their solo performances. Nevertheless, they get reunited for some special musical shows or concerts from time to time.
