The band was formed with E, drummer Jonathan "Butch" Norton and Tommy Walter. They signed a record deal with Dreamworks Company of Steven Spielberg. Their debut album ' Beautiful Freak' was released in 1996. It was a melancholy pop record with lyrics by Everett. Eel scored little international success with numbers like ' Susan's House' and ' Novocaine for the Soul'. The album was influenced by grunge and hip-hop. The band then conducted lot of tours and played at many festivals. However in September of 1997 Tommy left the band.

In 1998 their second album was released 'Electro-Shock Blues' which was inspired by the E's personal life. At this time E was facing a very difficult time in his life with his sister committing suicide, few of his friends were dying and top of it his mother was diagnosed with cancer. The lyrics in the album indeed dealt with subjects like cancer, death and suicide. Although the album did not had any big commercial success as the other albums but it is still favorite of fans. The song 'Cancer for the Cure' featured on the soundtrack of the film American Beauty. Adam Siegel stepped in the shoes of Tommy Walter.

In 2000 Eels released the album 'Daisies of the Galaxy' a much happier work. The album work was collaborated with Michael Simpson, Peter Buck and Grant Lee Phillips. The song ' Mr. E's Beautiful Blues' was co-written by Michael Simpson. For the promotion of the album the band organized tour across Europe and America. By this time Eels were a 6-piece orchestra, including Lisa Germano

'Souljacker' was released in 2001, a darker album compared to 'Daisies of the Galaxy'. Many songs were co-written by John Parish and also played guitar on the album. Bass and keyboards were played by Koool G Murder. The song ' That's Not Really Funny' was used as theme for Monkey Dust a comedy series on BBC.

2003 saw the release of 'Shootenanny!'. Same year the shocking news of Butch leaving the group came.
He was replaced by Puddin on drums. In 2003 they had another tour The Tour of Duty with band consisting of E, Shon 'Golden Boy' Sullivan on guitar, drums by Pudin and Koool G Murder on bass.

The album ' Blinking Lights and Other Revelations' was released in 2005 and first release with Vagrant Label. The album consisted of 33 tracks. It also had contributions by John Sebastian, Tom Waits and Peter Buck. Eels conducted a tour called 'Eels With Strings' for the promotion of album. This tour led 'Eels With String: Live at Town Hall', a live album recorded in New York City.
