Elton John, in terms of popularity is rated as the greatest pop artists who emerged in the beginning of 70's. Initially, he served as a singer/songwriter. Unlike, other artists, John possessed versatility in his singing capabilities that ranged from soul, disco, country, and also classic pop balladry that also included rock rhythms. The rocking melodious skills combined with mind blowing stage shows gained him tremendous popularity in early 70's. Among the popular singles "Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" are the best heard numbers even till date.
Elton John is the son of a former Royal Air Force trumpeter who was John born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947. During his childhood days, he started playing piano at an early age of four, followed by a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 11. Six years later, in 1961, he got associated with his first band, Bluesology which kick started his musical career. John during this time, developed his musical skills and devoted time on the the solo concerts at a local hotel. Bluesology by the start of 1965 toured with some of the prestigious bands such as American soul and R&B which comprised of famous musicians like Major Lance, Doris Troy, and the Bluebells. However, Bluesology further expanded its popularity and toured several cabarets all over England in 1966. Dwight faced a lot of troubles initially, as he failed to clear the vocal auditions for King Crimson and Gentle Giant. Even though he couldn't make up to the Liberty Records as well, he was given a chance to work as a lyricist for Taupin. He started having conversation to Taupin's lyrics through mails. Soon, after this he changed his name from Dwight to Elton John. Elton was his first name at the time he was a Blusology saxophonist Elton Dean and his last name from John Baldry.
Some of his hit singles during 1972 and 1976 include "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Daniel," "Bennie and the Jets," followed by "The Bitch Is Back," and "Philadelphia Freedom." which were some of the songs that reached the top 20 musical charts. However, his FM hit single "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" could make up till the Top Ten.
Elton John came back in 1992, with "The One" which was a smashing hit reaching at number eight position on the U.S music charts. This album of his went platinum twice, and became one of the most greatest hit album. In 1994, John got associated with the famous lyricist Tim Rice to write songs for the Disney's animated feature "The Lion King." Not only this, he has also won a Grammy Award for the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his hit number "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Yet another album was released in 1995, titled "Made In England" that proved to a success as well, followed by "The Big Picture" which was released in 1997, which comprised of a hit single "Something About the Way You Look Tonight."
In 2000, John appeared on a TV special with CBS and performed a some of his popular hit numbers at Madison Square Garden. However, 2001's "Songs From the West Coast" was a major come back of the great artist who was appraised for his success since the eighties.
