Erykah Badu, born as Erica Write in Dallas in 1971, Badu joined the school of arts where she also worked as a school teacher in her home town. Her childhood days were spent listening to 70' s soul, and 80's hip-hop. Music always remained her core area of interest. Her first album "Baduizm" that was released gained comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997. But, a song from her album Badunizm grabbed a number 12 position that titled "On & On" which helped the album push on number two charts.
In 1994, Erykah preformed in D'Angelo's show where she was noticed by the manager Kedar Massenburg who signed her up with the singer to record a cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet "Precious Love." Badu was also signed up for Kedar's own Entertainment label who also acted as producer for Baduizm. The album starred Ron Carter on bass and several members of hip-hop stars "the Roots".
"On & On" was one of the number one R&B hit in the beginning of 1997 which let Baduizm followed it to the top of the R&B album charts by March. She came up with her Live album that was released later in the year. 2000 was the year when her much anticipated second studio album "Mama's Gun" was released. This album was co-produced by Badu, James Poyser, Bilal and Jay Dee. The hit single of the album "Bag Lady" was a huge hit that thrilled the audience across the country as well as abroad.
