Formed in 2004 , Family Force 5, was founded by Olds brothers, Soloman or "Soul Glow Activatur" and twins Jacob and Joshua together with their friends Nathan Currin and Derek Mount. The band was once known by Phamily too and while current name is derived from Fox Force 5 of Pulp Fiction. The band is a Christian/Crunk rock. In FF5 band, Solomon is a vocalist and guitarist, Jacob plays drums as well as vocals, Joshua, a bassist and vocalist, Nathan leads on keyboards and turntables whereas Derek plays guitar.
Because of the sake of the distribution of their debut album "Business Up Front / Party in the Back" to Christian music providers such as Christian bookstores, they turned down many contracting offers from mainstream record labels. This decision led FF5 to Maverick Records sharing a distribution deal with Gotee. Family Force 5 is often thought of as modern-day Christian music as the all the band members are professed Christians. Three members of the band, Solomon, Jacob and Joshua Olds are sons of Jerome Olds who is a Christian music artist who was known for his music throughout the 1980s . Jerome Olds doesn't perform any more now. However, the debut album of Family Force 5, has been criticized as well as praised by Christian and non-Christian critics. The album was praised for not containing overtly Christian content in any of its tracks. The exception was one track "Peachy,". This track was ostensibly written to convert a friend to Christianity and calls God by name. Another two tracks "Luv Addict" and "Replace Me", are often praised by Christian critics for their slight Christian themes even though they don't have any them of faith in the lyrics.
Family Force 5 performed at Creation Festival and the Ichthus Music Festival, and In July 2006 performed on the Underground stage of Cornerstone Festival. These shows and their blended music attained them a positive hype. Family Force 5 has also appeared on mtvU's "The Freshman Class". On DirecTV's CD USA they performed twice, first "Love Addict", and the second time, "Kountry Gentleman". In addition to this, they appeared on G4's Attack of the Show!, and CBS' "The Late Late Show" with Craig Ferguson on 14 July 2006. Family Force 5 has also contributed their music and vocals to the compilation album "Freaked! A Gotee Tribute to dc Talk's "Jesus Freak."
Because of their bad impression left by the video"luv Addict" in which the band members behave lustful to immodestly dressed females, Family Force 5 faced lots of controversy. The group member Soul Glow Activator, after this song being called immoral in content, described Christians who disapprove of the video in an interview with Christian Music Today as being "used to seeing it packaged in a way that they've seen over and over for the past fifteen years," and said that they "don't understand new art, new videos.". The band swiftly stopped the discussion about the topic after little explanation. Though this video became controversial, band was able to achieve moderate success in the CCM community.
On july 2006, Family Force 5 performed on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on the track "Luv Addict." They carried on with Craig Ferguson to smash the stage after the performance something similar to what Bob Barker did.
The latest album by the band is "Business Up Front / Party in the Back" released in 2006. The album is mastered by Leon Zervos. The advance copies of the album do not include the song "Replace Me". Though Solomon has explained that "Replace Me" was better song than "Color Of Water". Tracks "Kountry Gentleman," "Replace Me," and "Love Addict" were the first singles off the record. The video for "Kountry Gentleman" was actually released nine months before the complete album released in 2005.
