Formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, Fear was an popular American hard rock/metal band. The hardcore sound and music of Los Angeles can be beautifully heard in the music of Fear. Along with Circle Jerks and Black Flag, Fear has given a new definition to the punk music of America.

All the country came alive when Fear performs anywhere anytime. Fear was the brainchild of vocalist Lee Ving who has been often rumored to be a Vietnam Veteran. The other original lineup of the band consisted of drummer Johny Backbeat, guitarist Philo Cramer, and bassist Derf Scratch. In 1978, guitarist Burt Good became a member of the band but he didn't stay long with the band. Fear's lyrics had been sometimes regarded offensive by many people. Most of the band's lyrics were humorously directed toward women and homosexuals. Even if Fear didn't release an album till its fifth year of formation, the band raised to the zenith of popularity in a shorter period of time. Lee Ving's love for beer has been evident in many of the lyrics of the band's songs. The band members are no more performing together. All the members are busy with their individual projects. Fear has seen the inclusion and exclusion of many band members over the years. In 1978, drummer Johny Backbeat was replaced by Spit Stix. The debut single of the band was "I Love Livin' in the City" which was released on the famous Criminal Records. But the band didn't concentre on releasing their debut album straightaway. Instead, they began to perform at the punk clubs around Los Angeles. In the clubs they became so famous that they didn't need any introduction when they decided to release their first album. In 1980, Fear made an appearance in Penelope Spheeris's film entitled "The Decline of Western Civilization". Many people watched the film only to get a glimpse of their favorite punk band Fear.

In 1981, Fear got the opportunity to perform at Halloween episode of "Saturday Night Live" which was hosted by Donald Pleasence. In 1982, Fear released their debut album "The Record" under Slash Records. "The Record" was a big hit. But Lee Ving unexpectedly replaced friend and bassist Derf Scratch with Flea. Flea was replaced by Dickies' Lorenzo Buhne in 1984. In 1985 Fear released "More Beer". Just after the release of the album drummer Spit Stix and guitarist Philo Cramer left the band. When they quit the band the band become week. Fear teamed up with bassist Scott Thunes during their revival tour during the 1990s. Ving, Stix, Cramer came together and included bassist Will "Sluggo" McGregor also. All the members went on performing live again. But the band again got disbanded. Fear released only two recordings in the during 1995-2000. These were "Have Another Beer With Fear" and "American Beer". But Lee Ving didn't achieve his old reputation with these releases.

Currently, all the band members are busy with their individual projects. Lead Vocalist Lee Ving is performing with another band.
