Founded in 1967, The Gap Band was previously formed as " Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band". This band was formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This band was formed by the efforts of four brothers Charlie, Ronnie and Robert Wilson. In 1979, the name of the band was shortened to Gap Band. Gap Band attained enormous fame in 70s and 80s with their highly charged dance anthems and their emotional and ethereal love songs. This band is one of the well known R&B, funk and soul music group in US. In 1974, Gap band released its debut record on an indie label. This records gained a moderate success. At the time of the release of their album, there were 12 members in the group. Later the band remained confined to these founding three brother along with producer Leon Russell on the helm. With this condensation of the group, they started grabbing success in their hands in 1978 with songs such as "I'm in Love" and "Shake". The song "Shake" peaked the charts of R&B.

After changing the name as Gap Band, they had another success in their hand with release of another single, "I Don't Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance" in 1979. In 1980, The band had their biggest breakthrough with songs like "Burn Rubber On Me ", "Humpin", "Yearning For Your Love", "Outstanding", "You Dropped a Bomb on Me", "I Found My Baby", "Early In the Morning", and "Party Train". These class songs established them as in the category of class musicians.

Including four singles ""You Dropped a Bomb on Me", "Outstanding", "Oops Upside Your Head", and "Early in the Morning", four albums of the band, The Gap Band II, The Gap Band III, The Gap Band IV, and Gap Band V, gave them platinum sales while the songs topped the Billiboard and R&B charts. When Charlie turned to his solo career in mid 80s, the band started facing decline in their success by the end of 1984. They kept on recording albums and remains on tour. In 1985, Charlie appeared on a hit with funk group Zapp titled "Computer Love". Wilson's powerful vocals contributed a lot in establishing the careers of Guy's Aaron Hall and R. Kelly. The re unity of band in 1996 gave another super hit album "The Gap Band: Live and Well".

After 1990s, the Gap Band's well known hits have been sampled and covered by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Warren G., Blackstreet, Shaquille O'Neal, Mia X, and Mary J. Blige. Another release "Outstanding" was even sampled for a famous 1990s commercial for malt liquor. While the gap Band missed the time that these black musicians recorded many soundtracks for action films by a decade, they also produced and recorded some songs for Keenan Ivory Wayans' 1988 hit movie "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka". The musicians who are influenced by them include R. Kelly, Keith Sweat, Ruff Endz, Guy, Blackstreet, Mint Condition, Jagged Edge, and Aaron Hall. Sometimes back, their track "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" have been featured in the hit videogame Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas.

Recently in mid of 2005, Charlie has launched his second solo album, "Charlie Last Name, Wilson" which was produced by R. Kelly. Hip-O Records released a 2 CD compilation "Gold" on August 8, 2006, comprising the hit songs by Gap Band.

Though the band is often criticized for following, not leading the trends, the Gap Band has secured its place in soul music history through a number of great cuts that have stood up well and that continue to exert an influence on both classic soul radio and on younger artists of the hip-hop generation.
