The lead singer of the "Gary Puckett and The Union Gap", Gary Puckett was born October 17, 1942 in Hibbing, Minnesota. He grew up in Yakima, Washington and Twin Falls, Idaho and graduated from Twin Falls High School. Gary showed his high interest in music an singing while he was still in high school in Twin Falls, Idaho. He started playing and singing with friends at hops and local talent. Meanwhile, Gary got enrolled as a pyscho major at San Diego City College where he studied for about a year. Just after one year, he left his studies nad degree to hang out with local musicians. Eventually at one point, Gary formed an R&B group along with his friends called "The Outcasts". Though the band didn't last for long.
After the failure of this group but enthusiastic enough, Gary formed another band "Gary and the Remarkables". It was a band which while good, had nothing that was really remarkable. By all these efforts and failure, Gary realized that he needed something that would grab the attention and make his group really distinctive. After giving thought to many ideas, A military motif, he found working. Making this idea in a reality, Puckett formed the band in San Diego, California in 1967, and they were quickly signed by Columbia Records. In this group, each member was costumed in a blue and gold civil war uniform. As lead singer, lead guitarist and "General", Gary would command "Sargeant" Dwight Bement on bass, "Corporal" Kerry Chater on rhythm guitar , "Private" Gary Withem on keyboards and "Private" Paul Wheatbread on drums. The adapted the name of the band from the historic Union Gap, Washington, and named their group as "The Union Gap, featuring Gary Puckett".
A strong, passionate and powerful voice of Puckett together with the skills of producer/songwriter Jerry Fuller, made "Gary Puckett & The Union Gap" one of the most-familiar sounds on the radio during that period. Though this band was discontinued in 1970s but it has been one of the successful groups of that time. After the disbanding of the group, Gary Puckett continued with his solo career and had modest success as a solo artist, mostly performing and re-recording the band's classic songs. He played festivals, theaters, and arenas throughout the world and enjoyed continued success. He became a part of the highly successful 1984 version of the "Happy Together Tour". Other than Gary, it also featured "The Turtles", "The Mamas & Papas", and "Spanky & Our Gang".Though he shows his mild mannered behavior on and off the stage, but it gives no indication of the decline in the effect of his powerful voice, instead it has gotten stronger.
Till date, Gary has performed on over thirty network television shows and prime time specials including a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. Gary constantly tours nationally & internationally. He has just released his new album, "Gary Puckett - Live", and has recently released his first ever Chrismas CD, entitled "At Christmas". As of 2006, Puckett continues to perform live concerts in small venues across the U.S. Though the Band is no more now, still the group's hits continue to sell today, especially as part of 1960s hits compilations. All inclusive sales of the band's singles, albums, Puckett's solo efforts, and compilations, currently exceed 25 million units worldwide
