The Goo Goo Dolls were formed way back in 1985 in Buffalo New York by Johnny Rzeznik, the vocalist and guitarist for the band. He was joined by Robby Takac on bass and vocals and George Tutuska on drums. Of this original line up, only Rzeznik and Takac remain with Tutuska leaving the band after he had issues concerning royalty payments. He has since been replaced by drummer Mike Malinin.

The band was originally called Sex Maggots but was forced to change their name one night when a local club owner refused to let them on stage otherwise. The Goo Goo Dolls was decided on and stuck. The band had a tough time coming up- though they were adored by the underground, punk and college music scene, they were also see by many as a sloppy wannabe act following in the shoes of The Replacements. Their debut album was released in 1987 but it was in 1995 that the group had their first taste of the big time success when their single 'Name' became a hit. However, the band soon found themselves embroiled in nasty royalty disputes with their former label and finally opted for another company.

In 1998, the world got a chance to see the real power behind the Goo Goo Dolls when their single 'Iris' appeared on the City of Angels soundtrack. The movie wasn't so hot but this song was sizzling and suddenly everyone wanted to know where the Goo Goo Dolls had been hiding all these years- they seemed to have quietly taken over the stage when nobody was looking! The song was nominated for 3 Grammys and stayed on the charts for 18 weeks.
