Gretchen Wilson is a country singer/songwriter. When her single "Redneck Woman" debuted in May 2004. it reached number one faster than any other single in the previous decade. It was also the first single by a female artist to top the Billboard Country charts in over two years. The success of the single prompted her label to release her debut album, "Here For The Party." The album was a phenomenal hit, it entered the Country charts at number one and the Pop charts at number. It set a record for the best opening by a country artist by selling 227,000 copies in its first week.

Gretchen was born in the small town of Pocahontas, IL on June 26, 1973. She had a difficult childhood as her father left when she was two years old. She lived mostly in trailer parks and went to school only till the 8th grade. By the time she turned 14, she began working at the same club her mother was working at. But music continued to be the passion that kept her going. She became a member of two bands in her area. She migrated to Nashville in 1996 and sang demos and in clubs for the next seven years, besides working as a bartender.

It was during this time that she became part of a informal music outfit called Muzik Mafia. She along with John Rich and another member write the song "Redneck Woman." The song was autobiographicalas Gretchen discussed her life and redneck background. She finally got her big break when she auditioned for epic Records. And as they say the rest is history. She was signed up by Epic and her single "Redneck Woman" was released in late 2004. Her full length debut followed and before she knew it, Gretchen had become the hottest artist on the music scene.
