Jack Johnson is much more than your average musician. He is a singer, songwriter, surfer and a documentary film maker, not necessarily in that order. Johnson was raised on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, As a child his greatest passion was surfing. At the age of 17, he suffered a surfing accident which kept him out of the water for 3 months. His time out of the water proves to be fruitful as they allowed Johnson to hone his guitar skills. Johnson has been influenced by a wide range of musicians like Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, The Beatles, Dylan, Ben Harper, Radio Head, Marley and Kurosawa.
Johnson did not seriously pursue a career in the music until his college years at University of California at Santa Barbara, where he graduated with a degree in film.
Ben Harper picked up on a bootleg tape of his material, and took Johnson under his wing and on a four-month tour. This partnership resulted in Johnson's first album "Brushfire Fairytales", released in 2001. It showcased his laid-back vocals and ability to write insanely catchy melodies.
After touring for almost two years, Johnson released his second album, "On and On" to generally favorable reviews in late 2003. Many of the songs on "On and On," had previously been released on bootlegs, but received the accompaniment of a full band on the new album. Johnson's interest in surfing also led him to make several surfing films like September Sessions and Thicker Than Water, which were released on CD/DVD between the release of Brushfire Fairytales and On and On. Johnson has also appeared in the surf film Shelter, which was made by his manager Emmett Malloy.
His third studio album, titled "In Between Dreams," was released on March 1, 2005. He has outdone himself and created hypnotic, blues and funk-inflected groove flowing through the album.
Listening to his songs is as soothing as the warm rays of the sun. His music is true product of intensity and if you want to loose yourself in his rhythms, buy his tickets and experience him first hand. Contact your on line ticket vendor and get your tickets before they run out.
