Jamey Johnson apart from singing country music is also a songwriter. He was a born in a family of music lovers which has been the main reason Johnson becoming such a good artist. On his website Johnson says "Everybody in my family plays or sings something. Daddy had such a passion for music. He directed us kids in the choir, growing up in churches. He got me in the band when I was in junior high school. I played anything brass. I was composing for the band when I was 13. I was arranging when I was in the 8th grade. I can read and write music fairly well. I pretty much knew music theory before I got to college."
He started playing guitar when he was just 10 years old. And country music was very much loved in his home. Johnson started singing in the Montgomery clubs. In 1994 he left school. He was soon inducted in the Marine Corps Reserve. He remained there for eight years and improved style of singing.
However Jamey Johnson was not that well known musician till now. In 2000 he left Montgomery and came to Nashville spending every penny he had. In Nashville Johnson tried to perfect his skills of songwriting and singer. His first big break only came in 2005. For Trace Adkins, Johnson co authored a song Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. Honky Tonk Badonkadonk was a huge hit becoming number two. The success of the song diverted attention towards him. Johnson than started on the road for a career in music. For his first big hit Johnson did not have to wait for long. His first single The Dollar was released in 2005. His first single became a monster hit. On the country music charts The Dollar reached the position of number 15. The song brings to the forefront the intense performance of Jamey Johnson. The lyrics of the superb single have a moral message. But at the same time the song does not get over sentimental through the rough-edged and authoritative delivery of Johnson.
The musical personality of Johnson is very intense and appealing. He has the ability of both producing heart rendering ballads and also loud but good music. His low pitched vocals are characterized being country traditional but at the same time without deviating from current demands he makes a contemporary approach. Johnson does not want to have straight and traditional sound. Instead he he interested in giving variety of songs. Few of them being loud while others are slow, soft and sweet. In the 2006 Jamey Johnson released his first album titled 'The Dollar'. Johnson who had already shown his capability in his first single of same name, this album was bound to be a hit. In the first week of the release more than 12000 copies were sold. Johnson released 'The Dollar' with eleven songs Back to Caroline, Lead Me Home, It Was Me, My Saving Grace, She's All Lady, The Dollar, Redneck Side of Me , Keeping Up with the Jonesin', Ray Ray's Juke Joint, Flying Silver Eagle and Rebelicious.
