Jason Moran was born on 21st January, 1975. Jason had started playing guitar at six. while growing in Texas. However it was only at 13 that he his love for piano developed. He began focusing on jazz music from classical after hearing Thelonious Monk's music. He studied at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts of Houston. Later he went to Manhattan School of Music . At the Manhattan School of Music Jason got the chance of studying with another piano player Jaki Byard. Other avant-garde pianists also gave instructions to him like Andrew Hill and Muhal Richard Abrams.

While still at the Manhattan School of Music Jason Moran in 1997 was invited for a tour of Europe with the band of Greg Osby, a saxophone player. Greg Osby was impressed by his playing. This lead to more performance of Jason with the band of Osby when they returned back to America. In 1997 he worked on the album of Osby titled Further Ado. He then signed a contract with Blue Note. Jason's first album as a leader called ' Soundtrack to Human Motion ' reached his fans in 1999. The album was contributed by number of other artists such as bass player Lonnie Plaxico, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, drummer Eric Harland, and Greg Osby.

2000 was marked by the release of second album of Jason Moran known as 'Facing Left'. The album also had the contributions of drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Tarus Mateen. Later Jason, Mateen and Waits formed a group by the name of The Bandwagon. Their next album released a year later in 2001 called ' Black Stars ' and in which piano and saxophone player Sam Rivers also worked. In 2002 ' Modernistic ' was released which was a solo album of Jason. Following year a live trio album was released entitled 'he Bandwagon: Live at the Village Vanguard'. The album was recorded at Village Vanguard in New York.

Although Jason Moran has recorded under his own name. But he is also credited for performing and recording with number of other musicians such as Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson,Von Freeman, Ravi Coltrane, Lee Konitz, Christian McBride, Don Byron and Joe Lovano. He has also been the recipient of number awards and recognitions.
In 2003 Jason was named the ' Up-n-Coming Jazz Musician' of the The Jazz Journalists Association. The Down Beat Critics Poll has given Jason lot of recognitions in 2003 and 2004, voting him as Rising Star Composer, Rising Star Pianist. He also called Rising Star Jazz Artist. In 2005 Jason was named Artist of the Year by the Playboy Magazine.

On 1st February, 2005 Jason and the group The Bandwagon released an album known as 'Same Mother'. There were ten tracks on this beautiful album Restin', I'll Play the Blues for You, Field of the Dead , Aubade, Gangsterism on the Set, Fire Waltz, Jump Up, The Field, G Suit Saltation and Gangsterism on the Rise.
