In the 1960s Jay Black attained tremendous success and popularity. He has given number of hits like This Magic Moment, Cara Mia, and Come a Little Bit Closer. Jay Black was born on 2nd November, 1938 as David Blatt New York. Jay Black very successfully lead the pop band of 1960s Jay and the Americans. He started his career as a songwriter and singer while he was still in the high school. He and this schoolmate Marty Kupersmith founded The Two Chaps. They recorded two songs for Atlantic Records No More and Forgive Me. Jay very soon became the lead singer of the The Empires which was the vocal group of high school.
During this time the group Jay and the Americans had achieved some success through their two songs Tonight and She Cried of 1961 and 1962 respectively. However the third song This Is It of the group failed which led to one of the original member of Jay and the Americans, lead singer John Traynor to leave the group. This led to Sanders introducing the band to Jay Black. It was at this time that he changed his name from David Blatt to Jay Black according to the group.

Under Jay Black, Jay and the Americans slowly rosed to fame. In 1964 the band released Come a Little Bit Closer which turned out to be their greatest hit. The song not only made them more known but for the first tour of America, Jay and the Americans were chosen to open for the greatest group of all times The Beatles. Jay and the Americans then released number of other hit songs like Cara Mia, Sunday and Me , Think of the Good Times, and Let's Lock the Door in 1960s. However the next songs of Jay and the Americans could not garner much success which led to the group breaking up. But since they had achieved much popularity by now their fans were always eager to see them live. At the time when original members were leaving the band Jay Black remained with the group till 1980s. He played with number of artists such as Donald Fagen and Walter Becker.

In the 1990s Jay and the Americans reunited for special performances. In 2002 Jay and the Americans were introduced in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. In 2006 Jay Black and his band perform under the name Jay Black and the Americans.
