The band was formed in dead beaten corners of shadowy moth eaten corner of clubs an and some unknown venues across the city of Leeds, where lead vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew "Whitey" White, bassist Simon Rix, drummer and vocalist Nick Hodgson and Keyboardist Nick "Peanut" Baines, crossed paths and decided to give rise to a new band that would get them an opening slot at the Leeds Festival. The story of Kaiser Chiefs begins , when three high school friends Peanut, Nick and Simon started playing together in various bands since the age of 15; later on Ricky, who sang for the Rolling Stones tribute band was espied by the group and after a lot of dithering decided to join the trio. Their being at the core of UK's most exciting local music scent meant that the quartet had to raise their musical game a few notches and this they did with aplomb. They began by naming their group after a South African football team. They also started basing their songs on all the peculiarities of Northern England life which added a sparkle to their songs, as the sounded like a mix of The kinks to Roxy music to Blur to Madness. These songs and essentially their music struck a chord with their first self-financed single "Oh My God" hitting #66 on the UK charts. The single was release on the Indie label DrwonedinSound and had a limited release. Their follow up 'I Predict A Riot" shot right into the fringes of the UK to 20, a testimonial to the bands commitment to improving themselves constantly.

They were picket to open the NME Awards tour 2005, the seminal slot that has helped set bands like Franz and Coldplay to superstardom. Their popularity was such that it led to a bidding war between US labels and that too within just 3 months of trying to find a home in the UK.
