"Just wait and watch this American girl will rock the world one day with her compositions and songs". This was the comment Mariah Carey received when Tommy Mottola heard her for the first time. And the outcome of that comment is evidential. Mariah Carey is one the most revered singers in American R&B. She was born on March 27, 1970 and soon she became a pop singer, songwriter, record producer and also occasional actress. Mariah is famous for her five-octave vocal range which stirred the world with her debut in 1990. She is one of the most successful, best-selling singers, not to mention being a highly respected female of all time too. Until now she has released 15 number-one singles and 4 number-one albums in the U.S. and is currently signed to Columbia Records. Digging into her past, Mariah was born in Huntington, New York to Patricia Hickey, an ex- opera singer and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer. Music was said to be in her genes that's why she started singing at the age of 4 and her first public performance came at the age of 6. She started writing songs in her grade school and soon she gained attention of various people around her. Mariah somehow graduated from Oldfield Middle School and Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York. Once out of the school he started her music career as a back up singer for Brenda K. Starr.

In 1988 in a party she bumped into Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola (her husband), where she gave him her demo tape. He was so much impressed by her voice that in no time he signed her to the recording contract. This fairy tale marked the entrance of Mariah in the music arena that too with a bang. Her professional music career got kick started in 1990 with her debut album "Mariah Carey" in which she penned down all the compositions along with Ric Wake and Rhett Lawrence. Till date they both pen down her compositions and contribute to be one of the strong pillars of her success. Her debut album climbed to number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart a year, where it remained for eleven consecutive weeks. In 2003, IFPI declared her as "the number-one selling female artist ever born in the history of recorded music, that too only after legendry people like The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Apart from that she also enacted roles in various films such as The Bachelor released in 1999 in which she starred opposite to Chris O'Donnell. But the response she got for her performance was lukewarm since the limelight was hovered on Renée Zellweger. She was critically written off by various actors as they commented that she can't act. Thus, she refused all the subsequent movie offers she got after that and concentrated only on music.

Mariah was one of the various musicians who did a cameo in the independently-produced Damon Dash films such as "Death of a Dynasty" in 2003 and "State Property 2" in 2005. She also tested her acting skills at small screen where she enacted the legal client of the title character in Ally McBeal. She also did a cameo in one of the episodes of the animated children's series The Proud Family.
