Maroon% of New York City is an adventurous, risk-taking, youthful band with a jazz orientation. But it is injustice isn't to say the group is comprised of jazz purists or bop snobs. Actually, Maroon% is far from straight-ahead bop. Vocalist Hillary Maroon led colleagues provide mildly avant-garde jazz which is greatly influenced by rock, soul, funk and other wide variety of influences in their work. Novelty, penchant for performance and ritzy music are assets of the group. A sardonic lyric of their subtle genius makes fans to stand in long quest for tickets.

Maroon group led by vocalist Hillary Maroon and pianist / keyboardist Benny Lackner, Derek Nievergelt, Lance Carter a drummer and percussionist for thirty years. Hillary Maroon's passionate, expressive lead vocals give the impression that she has been influenced by Cassandra Wilson, Betty Carter, Sheila Jordan, Carmen McRae, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone and Chaka Khan. Though the group can be often abstract, cerebral and eccentric, but they are also quite musical and funky and know how to groove. Though the foursome have an inside/outside perspective, yet one can say they are more inside than outside. Along with providing original material, the four friends are great at interpreting popular songs unlike other jazz artists. Maroon and her allies don't exclude or include the legendary jazz artist Tin Pan Alley in total.

They have also brought the jazz potential in songs by Radio head, Bob Dylan, Soundgarden, John Lennon, and the others. They are known for their willingness to bring rock material into a jazz-oriented setting. if Hillary Maroon and her colleagues are embracing the Pretenders, Dylan, or Soundgarden, they aren't simply imitating them. They're reworking it. That is what jazz improvisers have been doing for generations. So even though, the group is bringing a real improviser's mentality to the fore.

Hillary Maroon formed Maroon in Brooklyn in 2000 with pianist/keyboardist Benny Lackner. On the first album," Migratory", Maroon and Lackner employed Andrew Emer on bass and three different drummers. But soon, they hired drummer Lance Carter and bassist Derek Nievergelt and trumpeter Terence Blanchard to singer Diana Krall. Meanwhile, Migratory was released on the label of Brooklyn-based Head Full Brains in 2002. The band's second album, who the Sky Betrays was, recorded in2003.

The new CD, Who the Sky Betrays features a new rhythm section of Derek Nievergelt and Lance Carter. It has also special guests Marc Ribot, Nate Wooley and Alex Hamlin. Spotlight is on the band's dual focus on originals and radical reinterpretations of rock songs and finest jazz standards. Maroon expands on and explodes the both jazz piano and jazz vocal trio traditions. The album is "Intelligent, passionate, adventurous music...it is described an intense listen; politically sharp, often. Emotionally raw. It is light years away from the modern pop that passes for [vocal] jazz these days.

The band takes the traditional piano trio and then refashions it into a completely contemporary sound. With a subtle infusion of electronics a la E.S.T., and a sometimes aggressive style the group sounds more like a pop band. Hillary Maroon's voice rasps and soars, whispers and growls. Since 2000, they have performed at various New York and Southern California clubs and colleges. During the attack on Iraq, it organized a Jazz against War concert to benefit peace activists.
