Nelly Furtado is considered to be one of the renowned singer/songwriter of the mainstream music industry. She comes from a very simple but yet creative family background from where she sharpened her talent and songwriting skills to establish herself as a true musician. Nell Furatdo was born and brought in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Her parents were working-class and right from her childhood days induced work ethic in her, at the time of her upbringing. However, she worked as chambermaid for nearly eight summers along with her mother, who was into housekeeping. Soon, she realized that it wasn't simple to earn money for daily living. Initially, music was just a part of her hobby which took the form of a serious career. She learned to play guitar and the ukulele, while also developing her interest towards famous R&B music artists including Mariah Carey, TLC, Jodeci, Salt-N-Pepa, and Bell Biv DeVoe to name just a few.

It was only later on that her musical likes broadened as she began she listened to her elder brother's collection of music tapes that included some of the legendary artists like Radiohead, Pulp, Oasis, Portishead, the Verve, and U2. She also embraced various musical genres such as Brazilian music which was her favorite amongst all of them, followed by some ethnic works by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Amalia Rodrigues. Hip-hop played an important role in grooming Furtado's musical ambitions.

Soon after the completion of her high school, she moved to Toronto where she got herself a job at an alarm company. During day time she used to work in the office, while at night she devoted herself to music practicing for long hours. Finally, she joined a hip-hop pair called as Nelstar and with the coming of this opportunity there was no looking back for Furtado. She took her inspirations from the hip-hop legends like De La Soul and Digable Planets.

Her writing skills got finished as she came out with some the real good melodies and freestyle rhymes. Nelly Furtado's musical interests began to take a turn when she performed at a local Toronto club during that week. Over here, she got recognized by some of the top shots of the music industry like Brian West and Gerald Eaton, the popular Canadian funk-pop band the Philosopher Kings. They got highly impressed with her strong appearance and asked her to work on her demo. It was during this time that Furtado released her debut album "Who a Nelly" under the poplar label Dreamworks in the end of the year 2000.

The release of this album was followed by a headling tour of the U.S in the beginning of spring 2001 that got huge response from the fans all around the world. The hit singles include "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light" which became real popular in almost every home of US. The talented artist also received four Grammy Awards which added to her flourishing success, for the songs "Song of the Year" and "I'm Like a Bird." However, yet another album "Folklore" was released in the November of 2003, and just after two months she gave birth to a baby girl, named Nevis.
