McLachlan received classical vocal training as a child and this has proven to be a defining mark in her music which has a trademark lilt or hiccough, tripping easily into falsettos in mid song. Though McLachlan is well known for her critically acclaimed albums and singles, she gained international notoriety for her organization of The Lilith Fair, which showcased only female musicians because McLachlan was growing frustrated with an industry that was still uncomfortable with an all female concert.
