This pop singer was born on 27th April, 1959. she comes from Bellshill, Scotland. She came in notice with United Kingdom TV program The Big Time. This was a 1970's reality TV series which recorded her as she went on a hunt to secure a record contract and soon she signed with EMI Records.

Her best known early musical works include songs from "For Your Eyes Only", and "Morning Train" ( this was originally called "9 to 5" in its British release but was altered for North American issue so as to avoid any case of mistaken identity with Dolly Parton song "9 to 5"). "Morning Train" was the only number one hit for her in the U.S, it also topped both the Adult Contemporary charts as well as the Hot 100 in Billboard magazine.

1983, "Strut" which came out in 1984 and "U Got The Look" duet with Prince (1987).

With "Strut" she moved on towards a sexier image and got mixed reactions from her listeners and fans. She was also one of the early artists to have music video banned due to the lyrics rather than its imagery as some broadcaster refused to play sexually risqué "Sugar Walls". The lyrics were written by Prince with pseudonym Alexander Nevermind. The same song was also termed the "Filthy Fifteen" along with Princes "Darling Nikki". In spite of all this the album A Private Heaven was a major hit. The song was among the top three in the R&B singles chart.

During this time she also recorded Todo Me Recuerda a Ti ("Everything Reminds Me of You"). This was a Grammy-winning Spanish-language album. With "We've Got Tonight" he had a country music hit. Also with a duet with Kenny Rogers she made her mark.

She became one of the most versatile vocalist of 1980s. In 1987, she changed her music company from EMI America to MCA due to some contractual problems.

With Miami Vice, in 1987, she made her first dramatic acting appearance. She played a singer named Caitlin Davies. By the spring 1988 (latest installment of Miami Vice soundtrack was released), and on her tragic last appearance she sang the song "Follow My Rainbow". This was also the song that was included in her gold selling album The Lover In Me. The title song "The Lover In Me," was number 2 in the Hot 100. This was her first hit after "Morning Train".

In 1991, her last album 'What Comes Naturally', to the U.S chart was released. The title song was her last top 40 single which reached number 19.

She continued to act in America with Man Of La Mancha (1992) and Grease released in 1996. she played many roles in Gargoyles the animated series between 1994-1996. This included Lady Finella and the Banshee. She also voiced for Annah-of-the-Shadows in the computer game Planescape: Torment. Since the time of 2000 she has appeared Broadway-style show in Las Vegas.
