The famous horn-driven funk outfit Tower of Power had been releasing albums and touring the world constantly since the beginning of the '70s, together with to backing up numerous other musicians. Tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo has been the group leader since the beginning. He was born in Detroit, but went to pursue his passion for music in Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland that Castillo started a group called the Motowns. It specialized in '60s-era soul. Castillo came together with a baritone sax player Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and soon the Motowns was changed into Tower of Power
It was a regular in the Bay Area throughout the late '60s, and often had ten members performing for it. Famous performers have been a part of this group like: Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals and Rocco Prestia on bass. In 1970 they signed a recording deal with Bill Graham's San Francisco Records and released their debut album titled East Bay Grease in the same year.
In 1972 they released Bump City, which was a major hit. They have been called a must see live acts by their fans. In 1974 they released Back to Oakland and in 1975 Urban Renewal and In the Slot. They all were mild hits but never the less their on stage performances were being very well appreciated.
