Background:
This group comprises of the thirteen artists, but they always feature as twelve on the stage. They use traditional Chinese instruments when they play. They use them in their Chinese traditional songs as well as Western songs.
The band was introduced in 2001. From schools in the People's Republic of China (China), these girls were selected. And from the time of their discovery they had gained recognition in Japan and the PRC.
The Twelve Girls Band depicts the symbol of a dozen members featuring in the various section of the Chinese numerology having twelve months in a year. It is also related to the ancient mythology, twelve jinchai (golden hairpins), that is the representative womanhood. They were also inspired by the female chamber orchestras belonging to the Tang Dynasty.
The members who were selected for the band are trained in the classical music. They had the background that included the China Academy of Music; the Central Conservatory of Music and the Chinese National Orchestra.
Their multi- instrumental performance includes traditional Chinese instruments like: zither-like gu zheng having 25 strings and adjustable bridges. The even played dulcimer known as a yang qin; the erhu, or a two-string violin; the pear-shaped, which has four-stringed pipa lute; and vertical xiao flutes and the bamboo dizi. Punctuating percussion and Electronic keyboards add to the modern touch.
The instruments that the woman uses are: pipa (vertical mandolin), yangqin (dulcimer), guzheng (zither), erhu (Chinese violin) and dizi (flute).
The albums by them are: Beautiful Energy, Miracle Live, Eastern Energy and Shining Energy.
The group has also been called the '21st century phenomenon.' by many. This is due to their originality and the enchanting performance by them. They are full of energy and vibrancy.
They have been a multi platinum all over the Asia and now the band has been under the notice of the Americans as well. Romantic Energy - album by them is rightly called so, it is marked with sweet soft sensuous music that leaves deep impact o your mind and spirit. This has been the 62, on the Billboard top 200 charts. This also marked the highest recording in the Billboards by any Asian artist.
