Vanessa Lee Carton, is an American pop singer, songwriter, and pianist renowned for the single "A Thousand Miles" from her platinum-selling debut album Be Not Nobody (2002). Carlton's second album, Harmonium (2004), was a commercial failure, which led her to part company from her record label. Her third album is scheduled for a late 2006 release. This musician was listening to music even before she was born as her mother performed various classical pieces in her home piano.
Vanessa Carlton's had a very unconventional childhood. Music and focus had always been her main focus. The first sign of "musical" figured out at the age of two when she heard the song "It's A Small World" . Having fallen in love with the song she discerned the song's melody on the piano immediately. This inspired her mother to expose her to to a wide array of music, from Debussy to Pink Floyd. She composed her first piece at the age of eight and was obsessed with ballet at the age of nine.At 14, while she was accepted into the School of American Ballet in New York, she lived in a dorm in the famous Lincoln Center. She gradually became frustrated due to the strict regulations of the school which instigated her to play a piano from which developed a multitude of songs. Songs just poured out of her. She discovered the singer in her whilst amalgamating her piano and voice together.
Carlton signed the Inter Scope where she recorded the album Rinse, which never released. Rinse has twelve tracks, including songs that later appeared on her debut album, Be not Nobody, in slightly reworked form, such as 'Ordinary Day', 'Rinse', 'Pretty Baby', 'Twilight', 'Interlude' (later entitled 'A Thousand Miles'); songs that remain unreleased in any form, except for Internet bootlegs (which exist for at least seven of the twelve tracks), such as 'All I Ask' and 'Superhero'; and one song, 'Carnival', which was later reworked as 'Dark Carnival' for the Sony Play Station game Spy Hunter.
Her debut, 'Be Not Nobody' which hit the charts on April 30, 2002 included the hit piano pop single "A Thousand Miles", reached the top five of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Follow-up singles "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby", however, were less successful. She has been acclaimed in the Rolling Stone as one of ten artists to watch in 2002. "Harmonium" is Carlton's follow up to her multi-platinum debut "Be Not Nobody", which had the number one single "A Thousand Miles" and top ten single "Ordinary Day" which was a commercial failure.
In a post on her official site's forum, Carlton has implied that her third album would be released in 2006 although it would popularly be known as her second album due to a perceived lack of commitment to harmonium. Her collaboration with the Italian rock and blues singer Zucchero along with Haylie Ecker on violin for the song "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" was considerably successful, reaching the top forty in France. Carlton has successfully completed the marathons in 2005 and 2006. She has donated the pledge money to a non profit organization called Musicians on Call that brings live and recorded music to patients' bedsides. Each of Carlton's ingenious and individual tracks are unified by her unique talent and purity of her voice. It marks her emergence as a musical stylist.
