Background:

Vanessa Lynn Williams was born March 18, 1963, in the upstate New York town of Millwood. She had a passion for performing musical theater when she was still in her teens and won a scholarship in 1981 to study it at Syracuse University. She also won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1983 and became the became the first African-American woman ever to be crowned the winner. This was a short lived glory as her nude pictures were published by the Penthouse after her victory and so she had to return her crown.

She went back to her singing career and in 1986 she backed George Clinton on his album Skeletons in the Closet. She also started acting in the movies and did the action movie With Arnold which was titled Eraser.

She release her debut album in 1988 which was titled The Right Stuff and which featured a mix of urban dance-pop and adult contemporary balladry. In 1991 her sophomore titled Comfort Zone was released and was a major hit.
She also did some Broadway and did the lead in the famous Kiss of the Spider Woman. Later in the year she released Sweet Days which was her third album. She has also sung a few songs for the commercial versions of "Colors of the Wind."
