Vanilla Ice was born as Robert Van Winkle on 31st October, 1968 in Miami Lakes, Florida. He was earlier known as MC Vanilla. He changed his name in 1988 to Vanilla Ice and that is the name he is identified with. He is an American rapper and known popularly for the his hit single "Ice Ice Baby." He was also one of the very few successful white rappers of his time.

Van Winkle made his debut as a rapper with an album Hooked, released in 1989 on an independent label. It was not the best of starts as it sold only 48,000 copies. After his rocketed to fame the album become something like a collector's item among his fans.

His next album fared much better. Released in 1990 it was titled "To the Extreme." Although most of the songs were just reworked form his album "Hooked," the album featured his best selling single, "Ice Ice Baby", a rap song that discussed his self involvement, fame and talents. Van Winkle's manager and financier, Tommy Quon, decided to release the album in a limited edition, there was no vinyl release for the album, so fans had to buy the costlier CD, this made "To The Extreme" the first #1 album without a vinyl release. The album was a huge hit and sold over 11 million copies, making him the most commercially successful rapper at that time.

Van Winkle decided to capitalize on the success of his previous album and released his next album - A live version of To The Extreme titled "Extremely Live." Extremely Live was certified gold but Vanilla Ice's career was already loosing steam. His popularity sank and so did his albums. Extremely Live released in 1991 but was no where close to the sales of the predecessor. Vanilla Ice also starred in a few films. He debuted in the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, performing "The Ninja Rap" in 1991 and his 1991 star vehicle "Cool as Ice." His films flopped just like his music. The public was simply not interested

The year 1998 saw vanilla ice released his next album "Hard to Swallow," Ice tried very hard to reinvent himself as a hardcore rapper but to no avail. The public rejected it outright. Another attempt to recreate himself saw the same fate, 2001's Bipolar didn't fare that well either.

Van Winkle had his problems with the law also, in January 2001 he was arrested for assaulting his wife. He pleaded guilty to the charges of disorderly conduct and was ordered to attend therapy sessions. He has returned to the limelight with a number of television appearances. He was a part of the second season of The Surreal Life on VH1 in 2004. He gained some public applaud after the show. The same year, he appeared on British TV on a Reality TV show called "The Farm on five." He also starred in the film "The Helix...Loaded," a rip-off of The Matrix. He was then seen on a VH1 special show titled "Remaking Vanilla Ice", that showed a excited Vanilla Ice preparing for his new album "Platinum Underground" that was released in August, 2005. He also made an appearance in the MTV2 series Damage Control.
