The Warped Tour was created in 1994 by Kevin Lyman. Lyman got the idea while working on skateboarding shows such as the Vision Skate Escape and Holiday Havoc, he thought of mixing music and skateboarding on a larger scale. The Warped Tour became a touring punk music and extreme sports festival. The skateboarding shoe manufacturer Vans has sponsored the tour every year since 1995, so it is often referred to as the Vans Warped Tour.
In recent years, The Warped Tour has featured more than 100 bands per show, each playing for only 30 minutes on approximately ten different stages. Almost every mainstream punk band has played at The Warped Tour at some point in their career.

This characteristic has given the tour a reputation for featuring up-and-coming artists before they hit the mainstream. Bands such as blink-182, Limp Bizkit, No Doubt, The Suicide Machines, Papa Roach, and Eminem have all performed at the tour before becoming well known.
Sponsors are a vital part of the Vans Warped Tour as the cash infusion they provide subsidizes many of the tours expenses. This allows the organizers to keep ticket prices relatively low when compared to similar tours. As one of the most successful North American concert tours, The Vans Warped Tour continues to prosper. It sells more than 500,000 tickets every year, out-performing similar tours like the H.O.R.D.E. Festival and Ozzfest.

"First and foremost, the reason why Warped Tour has lasted longer than any of the other tours is the ticket price," said Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory, one of last years unofficial headliners. "It's like $25 for 100 bands," said Tre Cool of Warped veterans Green Day. "That's less than a buck a band."
