Matthew Sweet will Perform at the Vic Theatre on November 7th, 2004.
Power-pop cult hero Matthew Sweet is out
on the road supporting his latest release Living Things (Rcam). Released in
September, Living Things is Sweets 10th solo release in his
20-some-odd-year career and continues his tradition of post-punk influenced, pop-rock
songwriting typified by his 92 hit "Girlfriend". Having started with
Columbia Records in the late 80s, Sweet has spent most of his career in the Indie
label ranks and built his career with the DIY approach of regular touring and consistent
releases of quality CDs targeted to his core audience.
Matthew Sweet began his career with the usual
high-school band route in his home-town of Lincoln Nebraska, but his choice of College,
University of Georgia, landed him in the midst of the active Athens music scene in the
mid-80s. At the time, Athens was fertile ground for up-and-coming Rock bands with
the recent break-out for REM and Sweet found himself playing guitar for Oh-Ok, a
locally-influential band featuring REM vocalist Michael Stipes sister Lynda Stipe.
This lead Sweet to his own project, Buzz of Delight, and eventually to a solo deal with
Columbia Records. Sweets major-label success was short-lived, with just one release
on Columbia and one for A&M (1988s Earth). Sweet was picked up by
BMGs upstart Zoo Records and put out a string of radio-friendly and, somewhat
commercially successful, releases throughout the 90s. Today Sweet is enjoying his
hard-earned cult status, which allows him to headline good-sized theaters around the
country and sell enough CDs to keep any Indie label happy.
Matthew Sweet will be at the Vic Theatre in
Chicago on Sunday, November 7th. Velvet Crush will open. For more information,

Sweet web site.
