| In comparison to other more established
outdoor music festivals that come through Chicago, such as OzzFest, Jamboree, and Vans
Warped Tour, the 2001 Area:One festival proved a huge success in diversity. Held at the
Tweeter Center in south suburban Tinley Park, this music festival presented a wide variety
of live music creativity, catering to an assorted audience. Unlike the other well-known
outdoor music festivals who giggle disturbingly all the way to the bank, there is a
purpose to Area:One, and its proceeds, that must be admired.
The line up consisted of Nelly
Furtado, The Roots, Incubus, Outkast, and Moby on the main stage, along with the thumping
and fog-ridden Ford Focus DJ tent blasting the individual DJ styles of John Curley,
Rinocerose, Juan Atkins, Carl Cox, Carl Michaels, and Paul Oakenfold. This unique mix of
live music brought everyone and their grandma out (no shit) to take pleasure in the groove
of their favorite artist. Animated fans ranging in age from pre-teen to retiree were
apparent, however with the popularity of the pacifier near the Ford Focus DJ tent, ages
were difficult to distinguish. ;)
Unfortunately for all of us,
Mobys purpose for Area:One was NOT to concentrate on the dreadful and distracting
sound of the Tweeter Center. Instead, Moby, along with his posse of talented musicians,
gave up a piece of the corporate rock and roll pie to a couple of charitable
organizations, one of which is Green Peace. All in all, Area:One was a kick ass party with
excellent music and a purpose.
