Cathy Richardson Band

Cathy Richardson Band

By Mike O’Cull

Fans of hooky, guitar-driven rock and roll will find The Cathy Richardson Band much to their liking. Built on the time - honored guitar/bass/drums format Cathy's sound packs considerably more punch than the average female singer/songwriter while still remaining true to the troubadour tradition. Songs like the exquisitely poppy "Running Out Of Time" are the kind of thing she has become known for, but she has also stretched her writing wings to include gospel flavors, jazz and R&B tones, and even psychedelia, as evidenced by "Fly" from her 1998 release "Snake Camp". No longer just a girl with a guitar, Cathy’s writing has shown much maturity and artistic growth in the last couple of years.

Cathy has a new project on her plate lately, one that will bring her into the world of theater. She has been chosen to be the singing voice of Janis Joplin in the musical "Love, Janis". The play is based on Laura Joplin’s biography of her famous sister, and features musical direction by Sam Andrew, who played along side Janis in Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Kozmic Blues Band. This may well prove to be a significant break for Richardson, as this will expose her impassioned voice to an entirely new audience.
