| Helaine Karlin is a talented 26 year old
singer/songwriter whose new CD Don't Quit Your Night Job, shows some real promise.
This is the follow up to an EP previously released under the title I'll Have What Sue's
Having. With her wonderfully warm voice and natural feel, there's little question that
she has a very bright future.
With that said, let me back up and give you some facts
about this young woman. Helaine Karlin was the recipient of the ASCAP Popular Panel Award
for July '99 - June 2000. She has been in different bands in Chicago as both a lead and
back up singer, she currently performs with both a full band and as a duo with guitarist
Neil Laferty and she recently appeared, as a choir member, in the R. Kelly - Celine Dione
video for You Are My Angel.
Helaine's new CD Don't Quit Your Night Job has some
very nice moments, the highlights being Wonderful Tonight, Send Me Someone To
Love and the title track. It is with these three songs that she finds her style and
creates the moments that you want to listen to again and again. As for the rest of the CD,
it falls on the side of pleasant rather than the side of nirvana. I found the remainder of
the CD frustrating because the three songs I mentioned earlier showed just how great this
release could have been. 'Pleaseant', although not a bad thing, serves only to highlight
the other three songs on the CD.
My final thought is more of a suggestion. I would hope that
Helaine Karlin will buy a copy of the Janive Magness and Jeff Turmes CD It Takes One To
Know One. I think that when you hear it you will know exactly what I'm talking about
and if she can't find a copy, I'll send her a tape of it. With all that Helaine has going
for her, I know that she is someone that we will all be talking about in the near future
and Don't Quit Your Night Job shows just how close she may just be!
